About

A Mind Map is a diagram of what you know about a topic. Mind maps can be used for studying, for thinking about a topic, for making plans, and more. Draw a mind map when you are designing during the LEARN step. Note down what you know about the design topic, and what you need to know. Write and make little drawings in your mind map.

FIGURE: Mind map of an egg carton that map shows the most important things about an egg carton: it is a container with space for advertising that is cheap.

What you need

  • You can map alone, but drawing a mind map with around three to five friends works better.
  • Paper, A4 size or bigger. You can also draw your map on a chalkboard or whiteboard.
  • Coloured pens or pencils.

How to do it

  • Write the title of the mind map in a block in the centre of the page. For example, write ‘Egg Carton’ if that is your design topic.
  • Branch out from the centre with lines and write down what you know about the topic.
  • Write down your questions about the topic too.
  • Add little drawings to make your map fun.
  • Check your mind map.
    • Is everything written down?
    • Did you miss anything?

Tips

  • Re-draw your mind map neatly if you like.
  • You may use coloured pens or pencils too.
  • Record you mind map so that you don’t lose it. You can scan it or photograph it.
