About
Camping is fun. We spend time outdoors getting fresh air and enjoying nature, and we get a chance to sleep in the open air or in a tent. We take equipment along when we go camping, things like clothing, backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, cooking utensils, and more. And we must take food and drink, of course. We also need camping utensils like cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans, plates and drinking cups, when we cook, serve, and eat our food.
Your task
Design a set of camping utensils. You may design any combination of utensils, for example, cutlery, or cooking utensils, or pots and pans, or plates and drinking cups, or any combination. You may, for example, combine a cutlery set with a set of plates. (Note: Do not design a camping stove, or oven, or anything that has a flame or heater.) Your camping utensils must be made of a suitable material, and may be battery operated if necessary, but they must safely enclose the electric parts. Construct a working model of your set of camping utensils and test it. Work on this project on your own, or together with a classmate.
The design thinking stages
Follow the five design thinking stages to ensure that you think of everything and do everything necessary in order to succeed in your design project. First, you must UNDERSTAND the design topic and the needs of the users. With that understanding, you can DECIDE what is important to your design solution and what is not so important. Then you CREATE to come up with ideas and improve them. Then you BUILD your chosen design idea in a physical form and improve it through trial-and-error. Finally, you TEST your built design idea to get the opinions of users. Use the methods from the Design Thinking for Schools website as you follow the design thinking stages.
