About

Dot voting is a way for a group of designers to find their best ideas. You can do dot voting after you have done Idea Storm (III), Idea Sketchathon (III), or any time that you need to choose the best ideas when designing.

FIGURE: Vote for your best design ideas by using coloured dots.

What you need

  • A group of about three to five designers to work together.
  • A quiet place to work, with tables and chairs, or a chalkboard or whiteboard or pinboard for the sketches.
  • Papers and pens or pencils.
  • Coloured dot stickers, or colour markers.
  • About an hour to do it properly.

How it’s done

  • Work on one designer’s topic at a time.
  • Place the sheets of papers with sketches somewhere visible.
    • Place them on a table, or tape or pin the sketches to the whiteboard, or a pinboard.
  • The designer explains their sketches.
  • Everyone votes for their preferred ideas.
    • Each person adds a colour dot sticker, or makes a mark with a colour pen or pencil, to their preferred 3 or 5 ideas.
    • The designer can vote too.
  • Add up the votes to find the best ideas.
