About
Signs are used in office and school buildings to identify rooms and other facilities. Signs guide people who are new to a place, and they are essential in an emergency. A school will have signs to identify all kinds of spaces, such as: classrooms, the auditorium, staff rooms, toilets, emergency exits, and so forth. Signs are designed using text, colours and graphics in a way that is simple, informative and attractive.
Your task
Design a collection of information signs for your school. Draw your signs on sheets of paper with coloured pens or pencils. Decide for which rooms or facilities in your school you will design signs. Remember that signs in a school should be clear, they should be easy to see. They should be neat, they should not be messy. And they should be harmonious, they should not be placed higgledy-piggledy. Work on this project in a small team with a group of your classmates.
The design thinking stages
Follow the five design thinking stages to ensure that you think of everything and do everything necessary in order to succeed in your design project. First, you must UNDERSTAND the design topic and the needs of the users. With that understanding, you can DECIDE what is important to your design solution and what is not so important. Then you CREATE to come up with ideas and improve them. Then you BUILD your chosen design idea in a physical form and improve it through trial-and-error. Finally, you TEST your built design idea to get the opinions of users. Use the methods from the Design Thinking for Schools website as you follow the design thinking stages.
